Project Details:
The University of Sunshine Coast Petrie Campus project involved the masterplanning of infrastructure to support the university’s growth on a 195-hectare site in the Moreton Bay region. The project also included the detailed design of the 20,000m² Foundation Building, which serves as the university’s flagship structure for its new campus. The masterplan was aimed at providing long-term infrastructure solutions to accommodate the university’s expected growth in size and student population over the next decade.
Services Provided:
As the Lead Electrical Engineer while working at WSP Australia, Suman Retnavel was responsible for the electrical infrastructure masterplanning and the detailed design of the Foundation Building.
Key responsibilities included:

- Power supply strategy assessment, evaluating diverse options such as renewable energy embedded generation, demand management, and utility costs to determine the most cost-effective and scalable electrical infrastructure strategy for the campus as it expanded.
- Leading the electrical design for the Foundation Building, including:
- Site electrical distribution to provide reliable power across the new campus.
- Standby generation and UPS power systems to ensure uninterrupted operation.
- Underground electrical infrastructure to future-proof the development and minimise visual impact.
- Lighting design for energy efficiency and functionality across various teaching and administrative spaces.
- Fire detection systems to ensure the safety of the students, staff, and facilities.
