The Queens Wharf Brisbane project is a landmark integrated casino and resort development, designed to serve as a premier destination for tourism, leisure, and entertainment. Spanning a large mixed-use area, the development includes hotel towers, a casino resort, restaurants, cinemas, and various entertainment facilities. The project aimed to provide a high-quality experience for visitors while ensuring a reliable and efficient infrastructure to support its complex operations.

Services Provided

While working at WSP Australia, Suman Retnavel served as the Lead Electrical Engineer for the initial design phase of the project, providing comprehensive electrical engineering services up to the 50% design milestone for the masterplanning and electrical infrastructure. Suman developed a robust power supply strategy to ensure continuous, reliable operation across the development.

Key aspects of the work included:

• Assessing the different parts of the development to determine appropriate reliability levels for each facility.
• Developing an electrical infrastructure strategy that met those reliability requirements.
• Ensuring concurrent maintainability across all electrical systems.
• Planning infrastructure in coordination with public utilities, including the demolition and recovery of existing assets.
• Leading negotiations with the supply authority for power provisions.
• Designing the 11kV network, substations, and a proactive fast load shedding control system for reliable power distribution.
• Managing temporary construction power requirements to support ongoing construction activities.

As the project has progressed, Suman now serves as a Technical Advisor and Owner’s Engineer for the client, providing ongoing support to resolve technical challenges on site. In this capacity, Suman continues to ensure that the project’s electrical systems are designed and implemented in line with the client’s high standards for reliability, performance, and safety.

Current responsibilities include:

• Acting as the client’s representative to oversee contractor activities, providing expert guidance on design integrity and adherence to project requirements.
• Conducting technical reviews of the contractor’s design to identify potential issues and ensure compliance with project standards.
• Commissioning witnessing and management, verifying that systems are installed, tested, and performing as expected.
• Providing on-site problem-solving and advisory services to address any technical issues, helping to maintain project timelines and quality standards.
